But if things went smoothly, she would be able to get proper treatment and a safe place to leave.
She would have broken free from the Meng family’s shackles, too.
No matter the outcome, as long as Yao Tang said yes to her now, it would be a win-win scenario for Yao Ran.
Yao Tang cast another cold glance at her.
“I’m not interested,” she repeated.
Her expression remained blank, and her hands never wavered from the steering wheel.
Yao Ran could only shake her head in disbelief.
“What did you say? You’re not interested? No, that’s impossible. Listen to me. The hospital has produced definite results for this medicine. I’m certain that it can be sold, one way or another.”
She held up three fingers and added, “You can get thirty million upfront, and this is just a portion of the total price. Once the drug is fully developed and mass-produced, you can push for a share in the profits as well.”
Yao Ran was so engrossed in her spiel that she failed to notice the way Yao Tang’s expression grew cold with every word she spoke.
Screech!
All of a sudden, Yao Tang slammed on the brakes, and the van came to a halt by the side of the road.
She turned to Yao Ran and said, “Get out.”
Yao Ran was stunned. She didn’t expect Yao Tang to be telling the truth. She thought the other girl was only bluffing to push for more benefits.
But now, Yao Tang was telling her to get out of the van.
Yao Ran was offering her the chance of a lifetime! Yao Tang only needed to sell the drug, and she would be set for life. Why was she refusing?
Was she out of her mind?
“Ha! Fine! You don’t seem to know what’s good for you, so I’ll just take care of it myself. Don’t you dare regret it once I’ve successfully sold this drug!”
Yao Ran shot another glare at Yao Tang before reaching for the handle of the car door. Just before she alighted the vehicle, she turned around to give the latter one last chance.
“Are you sure you want to let this opportunity go? Think carefully. With the money that this substance would fetch, you won’t have to worry about anything for the rest of your lives. Even the relatives you left behind in the countryside can benefit from this.”
Yao Tang looked her dead in the eye and said word for word, “Those are your relatives, not mine.”
Yao Ran practically choked on air. She couldn’t say anything to that.
It was true that those people were her relatives, and the very thought of it nauseated her.
“I see. Since you don’t appreciate my kindness, don’t you come begging me later on!”
Yao Ran sneered at Yao Tang with all the hatred she could muster.
Then, she took out the vial again and checked its contents. After confirming that everything was still intact, she smirked proudly at Yao Tang.
Deep down, however, she harbored a fear that Yao Tang would snatch the vial away.
With her martial arts, she could steal the drug with a single move.
Yao Tang took in Yao Ran’s expression and scoffed. She reached out and flicked the vial with her finger.
In the blink of an eye, the glass shattered.
Boom!
The crisp sound of a minor explosion rang out in the tiny space.
Yao Ran’s eyes were wide with horror and disbelief as she stared at the remnants of the drug splattered on her hand.
It was gone.
The one thing she had been pinning her hopes on for survival disappeared before her eyes. She had been relying on the medicine sample to buy her freedom!
Never had she imagined that things would turn out this way.
How was she supposed to live now?
“You’re still not getting out of the car?”
Yao Tang leaned back against her seat, her arms crossed over her chest, and raised an eyebrow. “I don’t mind getting the others to come and drag you out to the street, you know.”
“You!”
Yao Ran pointed a trembling finger at Yao Tang, her eyes filling with tears.
Meanwhile, the rest of the group was eyeing the partition, curious why they had stopped all of a sudden.
“Sister Tang?” Meng Yang had clambered through the seats and was leaning against the partition.
“Did something happen? Do you need my help?”
There was a small glass panel in the middle of the partition that allowed him to peer into the driver’s seat.
“Everything’s fine. Someone’s getting off, that’s all.”
With that, Yao Tang whistled and nodded pointedly at Yao Ran.
