President Cao could tell that Director Wang was very agitated. He proceeded to pick up the document on the table.
After opening the file and reading its contents, the expression on his face changed dramatically.
Director Wang leaned against the office desk as he glanced at President Cao every now and then. Even though he knew these were lies, he had to look confident.
“Huo Yulin already knew Lei Xiao a long time ago and he often helps us. R virus research is very important to us since it’s an unusual virus. We’re at the most critical part of our research now. Also, we have signed a NDA with an academic establishment overseas. When you sent Huo Yulin to the medical conference, I asked him to communicate with our foreign counterparts on our behalf. This was the reason he did not attend the medical conference until the fifth day.”
Director Wang paused before he said apologetically, “I did not expect the delay to bring so much trouble. President Cao, I assure you this is the truth. If you can’t take my word for it, you can always make a call to our foreign counterparts and verify the truth.”
Since the project was top secret and it was unethical to dig further, President Cao did not continue reading the document. He had heard about the R virus research project before. Since it would directly affect the well-being of their citizens, it was a top-secret research project.
“Why Huo Yulin though? He’s not a virus expert, right? How could he help the institute?” asked President Cao.
When Lei Xiao wanted to come over to the academy to ask Huo Yulin for assistance, the question was already on his mind, but he kept getting interrupted.
Director Wang came prepared, so he promptly replied. “Virus research is naturally related to his expertise. After all, viruses can attack the nervous system…”
He had done a lot of homework before coming over to the academy, but the doorbell went off, interrupting him.
Director Wang paused mid-sentence. Before long, the security guard captain quickly entered the office. “President Cao, we have recovered the missing surveillance footage for the night.”
The moment the president heard what he said, he stood up from the chair and looked at the security guard captain coldly. “What did you see in the footage? Any new leads?”
The security guard captain nodded. He retrieved his phone from his pocket and tapped on the recovered video file before handing the phone to the president.
Director Wang narrowed his eyes upon hearing this. He walked around the table, stopped beside President Cao, and looked at the phone screen.
Director Wang was feeling worried about getting exposed today, but he promptly felt better when he saw the video footage.
Lei Xiao’s colleague came to see him yesterday with Huo Yao’s offer. Director Wang was genuinely tempted by the offer. After considering the proposal all night, he finally agreed to help.
It was easy enough to secretly aid in her cause. He just had to come up with a good story.
A few minutes later, a stern look emerged on President Cao’s face after watching the video. He kept rewinding the footage and watching it a few times before he returned the phone to the security guard captain.”I don’t get it. Why is it Yuan Huan?”
He certainly did not see this coming.
When the people from the Ministry of National Security came over for a meeting, he even invited Yuan Huan to join them. It would be a huge mistake if he was genuinely the thief.
“Investigate Yuan Huan’s background immediately.” President Cao narrowed his eyes as he spoke to the security guard captain.
“Yes, President Cao.” The security guard captain paused before asking. “Shall we notify the Ministry of National Security?”
President Cao contemplated briefly. In order to avoid misunderstanding, he shook his head and said, “Not yet…”
Before he could finish his sentence, Director Xi’s voice could be heard coming from the open door. “Why wait? If you have any potential suspects, we have to investigate them.”
President Cao froze briefly before raising his head to look at the door.
Director Xi strode in with an authoritative aura radiating from him.
