Tang Mo’er’s lustrous eyes were on little Gu Sihan. “Sisi, how do you know that your brother doesn’t want to marry Sister Little Lemon? Sister Little Lemon is a good girl, she’s the princess of Castle Guding and her name is widely known in the circle of socialites in Mexico. She’s the greatest socialite now. If I hadn’t arranged with Auntie Shi’shi since they were young, how would your brother even stand a chance?”
Little Gu Sihan ate another chip and she sighed. “I can’t wake a person who is pretending to be asleep.”
“…”
Tang Mo’er almost vomited a mouthful of blood. Even though Gu Yelin and Gu Sihan tried their best to behave like obedient children in front of her, she could sense that they had independent minds and could no longer be controlled by her.
She felt really defeated.
Gu Mohan watched Tang Mo’er’s beaten expression and the corners of his mouth unknowingly kicked up. With the superior genes from the Gu and Lu families, their children were destined to be extraordinary.
Both Yelin and Sihan had alarmingly high IQs.
Gu Mohan wanted to walk towards them but he suddenly felt a twinge in his chest. Clutching at his chest, his forehead was covered in cold sweat and his vision gradually darkened before he collapsed.
When his world turned black, he could hear Tang Mo’er screaming, “Mr Gu!”
…
In the hospital.
Tang Mo’er stood in front of the hospital ward, looking at the doctor with reddened eyes. “Doctor, how is my husband? Why did he suddenly faint for no reason?”
As the doctor looked through the test results, the expression on his face was solemn. “Mrs Gu, are you aware that Mr Gu has been taking sleeping pills?”
Sleeping pills?
These two words seared into Tang Mo’er’s mind, he had been taking… sleeping pills?
She had no idea about it at all.
“Mrs Gu, Mr Gu has been taking large dosages of sleeping pills every single night for the past three years. This is akin to slow and gradual suicide. We’ve just done a scan for Mr Gu and we discovered a shadow on his chest x-ray.”
Tang Mo’er gasped, he had some… cardiac problems?
She looked at the doctor in horror and she almost couldn’t breathe.
The doctor continued talking, “Mrs Gu, don’t be too alarmed yet. We’re not sure if the shadow is malignant or benign. If it’s benign, it can be resolved with medication but if it’s malignant, the consequences will be more serious.”
Tears almost rushed out of Tang Mo’er’s eyes. She covered her mouth, trying not to let out any sound.
Trembling, she quickly lifted her head to control the tears in her eyes. “Doctor, please arrange for the checkup as soon as possible!”
The doctor handed a consent form over. “Mrs Gu, I need a family member to sign on this consent form. May I know…”
The doctor was hesitant as he asked, “Have you registered your marriage with Mr Gu yet?”
Tang Mo’er almost wanted to take the pen over and sign on the form, but she realized that she hadn’t registered her marriage with him yet. They were planning to head to the City Hall to do that, but he collapsed before they even had the chance to do so.
“Not yet…”
The doctor was apologetic. “Mrs Gu, I’m sorry but you cannot sign this form.”
…
Gu Mohan slowly opened his eyes, looking at the white ceiling above him.
He was at the hospital.
Mo’er…
He got up swiftly.
A lithe figure ran over, helping him up. “Why did you get up? Does your chest still hurt? Lie down and rest, I’ll get the doctor to come over…”
Gu Mohan stretched his fingers out, lifting her jaw up. Her nose and lustrous eyes were all red, hot tears welling inside even. One look and he could tell she had been crying.
“Why did you cry?” he asked in a gentle voice.
Tang Mo’er’s lashes fluttered, stretching her arms out to hug his neck. “Mr Gu, can we go to the City Hall to get our marriage certificate right now?”
Gu Mohan held her in his arms, asking, “Why?”
“I just want to marry you right now, I don’t want to wait for even a second more.”
Gu Mohan gently pushed her away, holding her tear-filled face. He kissed away her tears with slightly furrowed brows. “Is it because… I’m not in good health?”
Tang Mo’er cried while shaking her head. “No…”
“Mo’er, tell me the truth.”
Burying her face into his large palm, Tang Mo’er choked back a sob. “The doctor says that you have a shadow over your heart, he needs to do a further checkup to know whether it is malignant or benign. The doctor wouldn’t let me sign the consent form because… I’m not your wife yet…”
Right after she said that he retracted his hand.
“Gu Mohan!” Tang Mo’er grabbed his hand, holding it tightly as she lifted her head and looked at him with teary eyes, shaking her head. “Please… please don’t push me away. I want to be with you… forever, I don’t want to leave you, don’t push me away…”
Gu Mohan looked at her, the corners of his lips rising into a gentle smile. “If you don’t let go of my hand, how am I supposed to get changed and go to the City Hall with you?”
Tang Mo’er was stunned. A few moments later, she smiled, appearing like a fool as she smiled and cried at the same time. “I thought that… you no longer wanted me…”
She had assumed that he wouldn’t want her anymore since he was sick. She was really terrified, not knowing what to expect. When compared to his sickness, she was even more afraid that he would push her away.
Gu Mohan held her face, wiping away the tears on her face with his calloused fingertips. “Mo’er, I’m different from you.
“Three years ago, when you contracted the AR poison, you pushed me away to somewhere else in advance before you left. You wanted to leave the best impression of yourself. You wanted to be the most beautiful rose in my heart so you set all of that up.
“But I’m not going to do what you did. I haven’t even undergone the checkup yet, who knows if the results will turn out to be benign. So what if it’s malignant? I will treasure every moment I have left in this world and arrange Yelin and Sihan’s future before I depart. I will love you, protect you, dote on you all the way till I really run out of energy and close my eyes. I will only cherish our remaining time together and cherish you even more until my last breath.
“Mo’er, I’m really getting old. I had my eyes on you ever since you were born, but I only managed to find you when I was 29 years old. I lost so many years with you already. We’ve parted and patched up our relationship countless times throughout these years. My heart truly ached for the last three years we’ve been apart and I had to rely on a large dosage of sleeping pills to fall asleep. There were so many times I wished that I would just not wake up.
“You were taken away by the sea three years ago and I even thought about jumping into the sea to look for you. When I saw you at Paradise Island, I told myself at that exact moment that I would grab your hand tightly this time and not let go.
“Mo’er, I love you, my feelings for you have never changed throughout these years. Poverty, illness and even death will never do us apart.”
After saying that, Gu Mohan kissed her tenderly on her forehead. He planted multiple kisses on her forehead while Tang Mo’er closed her eyes, tears trickling down her cheeks as a faint smile lingered on her lips.
This was Mr Gu’s most touching confession ever.
