A good person! A fair lady! Lu Jia’er was touched by those words which could be interpreted as recognition of her humanity. In his eyes, she was neither an outlier nor a special individual. He did not reject her, nor was he intimidated by her. He was still viewing her as a normal female human.
“Deputy Xu, I will engrave those words of yours in my mind!” Lu Jia’er said to Xu Lei with sincerity.
Xu Lei looked into her eyes and she smiled at him.
For a moment, Xu Lei felt he became absent-minded. Lu Jia’er’s eyes were so beautiful and clean as if they housed a pond of clear water which people would want to stop by to appreciate. When a refreshing breeze blew past the water, ripples would set off across its surface…
When Xu Lei came back to his senses, he found himself standing on the top of the mountain alone. The moonlight shone brightly on him, casting a stretched shadow behind in stark contrast.
Xu Lei could not remember why he had come here. He patted his forehead. The chilly breeze touched his cheeks and he could see a myriad light in the city. Somehow, strangely, he felt he was in a despondent mood.
Lu Jia’er, who had already come down the mountain and driven away, was frowning. It was against her will to treat Xu Lei like this. Yet, she did so nonetheless. She was not afraid that Xu Lei would make her identity public. Rather, she was worried that the information could bring him danger. Therefore, she persuaded herself to erase some of his memory with hypnosis.
If he ever learned about this, would he still see her as a kind person? Would he become fearful? Would he be afraid?
And there was the matter of Su Han. Where was she sent to? A lab? Or… would the two good friends be separated forever from now on?
Lu Jia’er drove back to Jin Xiangdong’s place.
Going into the door, the adorable Ake was the one receiving her. “Professor Lu, you are back!”
“Has your master returned yet?” Lu Jia’er did not see Jin Xiangdong, hence the question.
“No, he has not come back yet!” Ake answered.
Lu Jia’er nodded. Then, she picked up her cell phone to call Jin Xiangdong, only to find that the line was busy.
Putting down the cell phone, Lu Jia’er told Ake, “I think your master is still busy. I will call him later.”
Ake nodded. “Professor Lu, do you want some late night snacks? I will cook you some!”
Lu Jia’er shook her head. “No, thanks. I will head upstairs now.”
Ake blinked as he watched Lu Jia’er going upstairs. Twenty minutes later, Lu Jia’er finished her shower and had left the bathroom when she heard her cell phone ringing on the dresser. She hurried over to pick it up. “Ace…”
She heard Jin Xiangdong saying, “Jia’er, I won’t be able to go back tonight. Make sure to rest early.”
A bad feeling sprang within Lu Jia’er’s heart. She asked at once, “What happened?”
“Nothing!” Jin Xiangdong tried hard to conceal his sorrow so that she could not hear the abnormality in his voice.
“Ace!” Lu Jia’er shouted. “Tell me. What happened? Is it Jason… Is he…”
She didn’t get to finish her sentence but what she assumed was the fact.
Jin Xiangdong collapsed emotionally despite his efforts to cover up his feelings. Jason was his friend, his right hand. Such a young life was pronounced deceased right in front of him.
Jin Xiangdong did not say anything but Lu Jia’er could hear him choking. “I will head there right away!” She said.
“Jia’er, don’t…” Jin Xiangdong tried to stop her but she had already hung up.
