When promises were made, no one was willing to believe her existence. However, there were always people who made promises that were easy to fulfill. It was as if in his heart, these seemingly simple but extremely heavy promises did not require any strength at all.
Little did she know that behind the promise was a heavy burden.
Qu Xiujie was no longer young. Compared to those young men who chased after Mao Nana, he did not have any merits because he knew where her future was and how promising her future was. Hence, Qu Xiujie did not want Mao Nana to follow him all the time. She would experience all the hardships and bitterness that he would have, not to mention that he still had an unfinished business.
The Qu family’s matter had yet to be resolved and Pei Ge’s father’s case had yet to be revealed.
These things were waiting for him to realize bit by bit. He could neither delay Mao Nana’s future nor leave Zhang Manhua unable to return to her original place in the Qu family.
“Uncle, do you know that my heart will ache if you say that?
Tears streamed down Mao Nana’s face as she looked through the shadows. Qu Xiujie, who was sitting in front of her, looked like he had four eyes but when she blinked, everything returned to its original state. Qu Xiujie was still Qu Xiujie but the feelings between them seemed to have disappeared.
Or rather, it had never existed.
Mao Nana did not mind Qu Xiujie’s previous reputation. She did not even mind how many women Qu Xiujie had slept with before her. She was certain that this was the person she wanted to be with and this was the reason why she was willing to give up her bright future.
However, Qu Xiujie, who was sitting on the floor, had never thought of this.
“Mao Nana, don’t you understand what I’m saying? How many times do you want me to repeat myself?”
Qu Xiujie harrumphed as he looked at Mao Nana with a cold gaze. There was a murderous aura around him and Mao Nana could feel it easily.
“So, in your eyes, I, Mao Nana, am a casual woman?”
Mao Nana felt as though her heart was being cut by a knife. She looked at Qu Xiujie without any expression and even her tears did not fall.
“What else? Could it be that you have the same status as Pei Ge and are qualified to stay by Ji Ziming’s side? Do you?”
Qu Xiujie scoffed and revealed a mocking expression.
“Uncle, I understand. It’s my fault. I’ll leave. You don’t have to worry; I won’t stay here for long. Don’t worry; I’ll leave tomorrow. No, I’ll leave tonight. Just sleep well and eat your food. What happens to me has nothing to do with you.”
Every word that Mao Nana said sounded exceptionally distant to Qu Xiujie.
“Alright. Since you’ve decided to leave, then please return the key to your room. Don’t let my sister rush you. Also, my sister is so much older than you. Don’t you think you’re too casual with her? You and Pei Ge are of the same generation.”
Qu Xiujie’s eyes were cold as he looked at Mao Nana and his tone was terrifyingly cold.
“I got it. Don’t worry. I’ll leave if I have to. You don’t have to force me to leave. I’ll leave by myself.”
Mao Nana sniffled. She originally planned to leave tomorrow morning but was forced to sit up. She wanted to reach her feet out but was stopped by Qu Xiujie.
“Mao Nana, are you a pig?”
Mao Nana sounded aggrieved. Why did she become a pig when she listened to him? Could she evolve into a human in Qu Xiujie’s heart?
“What about me? Can’t I leave now?”
“Uncle, what are you doing?”
Pei Ge, who had just entered, saw Qu Xiujie violently tugging on Mao Nana’s short skirt and dashed in in shock. However, because of Pei Ge’s entrance, Qu Xiujie’s cold expression was slightly restrained and he merely said in an abnormally cold voice, “Since you’re here, I’m leaving.”
“Uncle, you…”
Seeing that Qu Xiujie was about to turn around and leave, the tears in her eyes became more clear and her heart turned cold. She knew that this would be the outcome of her persistence but she refused to believe it.
She did not want to believe that her fate was that pathetic. Everything she liked would not be under her control, much less under her name. However, her unwillingness to believe this time proved that she had never been happy since she was young.
“Why are you calling me? What do you want me to say for you to understand?”
Qu Xiujie growled. She was about to hold on to the corner of Qu Xiujie’s shirt but stopped awkwardly in mid-air. The aggrieved look on Mao Nana’s face could be seen clearly. Pei Ge’s heart ached when she saw Pei Ge standing at the side. She clearly told her uncle about Mao Nana, so why did it become like this when she came back?
“I’m leaving. Don’t call me if you have something on and don’t call me if there’s nothing on. If you want to continue staying in this house, you’d better stay far away from me. Otherwise, I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ve already warned you. If you don’t want to listen to me, then don’t blame me!”
Qu Xiujie gritted his teeth and looked at Mao Nana as though she was his enemy. His heart ached but the straightforward expression on his face made him even more vicious.
Mao Nana did not dare to say another word and just nodded. She allowed her tears to flow down her cheeks and onto her fair arms.
“Nana, don’t be afraid. Stay in the house. Uncle won’t chase you away with me around.”
Pei Ge could not stand it anymore. Although from a bystander’s point of view, Qu Xiujie was indeed doing this for Mao Nana’s good, his actions were too rough and ruthless. Mao Nana, who was originally kind-hearted, could not take it anymore. If Pei Ge did not come to comfort her, she would probably be broken into pieces.
“Okay, Ge Ge. You don’t want your uncle anymore? I’ll leave now. You guys stay here and don’t call me when you’re having dinner. I won’t eat!”
With that, Qu Xiujie turned around and walked out of Mao Nana’s room. The sound of the door closing was very clear and loud, and it slammed shut in Mao Nana’s heart. There was no key and no path.
Even Mao Nana herself might not be able to walk out of the wall surrounding her heart.
