Madam Ji was using a towel to wipe the leaves of the money tree when she heard Pei Ge coming down the stairs. She turned around to ask, “Are you going out? Go have breakfast at the dining room first. My son is already waiting for you there.”
The latter nodded. Her makeup was immaculate, and her eyes were brimming with gentleness. It was a gentleness from just seeing her children.
“Ge Ge, when are you free? Go shopping with me. I haven’t gone shopping with you for a long time. That old man took quite a few of my face masks and skincare products last night. I really don’t know what use there is for an old thing like him to use such.”
While wiping the leaves of the money tree, she complained about Qu Xiujie. Still, she was merely complaining and not truly acting on it.
“Mom, if you want to use those skincare products, I can make a call and have my subordinates deliver some over.”
Pei Ge stopped beside Madam Ji. Thinking about it, it was her uncle who had been in the wrong first, so she could not blame the older woman for complaining.
“No need; it’s fine. I haven’t been out shopping with you for quite time, so I just want to shop with you. Don’t tell your staff to deliver those over. How about we go shopping when you have time?”
Madam Ji joyfully rejected her suggestion. In her heart, Pei Ge was no longer just the mother of the three children but also an irreplaceable person in the family.
“Alright, mom; I understand. I’ll be done handling company matters in a few days and can go shopping with you.”
Knowing her thoughts, the younger woman agreed readily. However, she still put it out there that she was currently very busy and had many things at hand. The company did not regain its tranquility because of Ji Miao’s suicide.
Instead, an unknown problem had surfaced in the company which was awaiting her discovery and solution.
“It’s fine; it’s fine. I’m not in a rush. I still have some at home anyway. Go do what you must. Both of us can go shopping after you settle your things, but don’t bring your uncle along. He only knows how to anger me. He acts as if this house isn’t mine but his.”
The mention of Qu Xiujie caused anger to surface in Madam Ji’s eyes, though it was not fury per se. It was just that there had not been anyone who had gone against her publicly in so many years.
How could she not flare up at this?
‘Mom, my uncle probably just finds it fun, so don’t mind him. I’ll talk to him some time.”
Pei Ge felt a bit awkward as she plastered a stiff smile on her face. As long as the two elders were under the same roof, she felt that there would be no peace in this house.
“I’m not angry, just… forget it; forget it. Let’s not talk about it. Anyway, he is now eating in the dining room. Ge Ge, go scold him. You guys are family, and so are we. We are all part of the same family. Tell him not to anger me anymore, or else I will chase him out.”
The older woman’s voice was filled with ruthlessness. Although it was not very aggressive, it still made the other feel sad.
“Ge Ge, don’t panic; I don’t truly want to chase him out. I’m just scaring him, so don’t worry.”
Madam Ji could see the touch of desolation in her eyes and hurriedly explained herself. That was her daughter-in-law’s uncle. Although their interaction was not exactly pleasant, she must admit that there were some areas where Qu Xiujie impressed her.
“Mom, I will talk to my uncle; rest assured.”
Pei Ge promised the older woman and let her arms hang beside her.
“Aiya, I won’t complain about your uncle anymore. Alright, alright. Go have your breakfast, then handle your company issues with my son. I know that you’ve been busy recently. I will be home, so I will be around to take care of Ran Ran. Go on. As for that old thing, I will be around, too.”
Madam Ji visibly paused at the mention of Qu Xiujie. As long as it was something good for the couple, she would be the first to stand up and agree.
“Alright. Thank you, mom; I’ll go over now.”
Pei Ge nodded and picked up her handbag. She then gracefully walked toward the dining area.
As expected; Ji Ziming and Qu Xiujie were having a pleasant time chatting. She finally understood where Madam Ji’s worry was coming from. One could see it from the way her uncle was treating her man compared to the treatment of the man’s mother.
“Morning, uncle.”
She politely greeted him.
She walked past her uncle and sat beside the man.
“Morning, niece. Did you sleep well last night?”
He was just asking politely, but Pei Ge’s expression stiffened for a few seconds.
Last night, she had been tortured back and forth by a certain someone. She slept at dawn but had to wake up early because she was worried about the kids. Only afterward did she come down for breakfast.
“I’m pretty good. What about uncle?”
Qu Xiujie easily got it from her response. Without even much explanation, he already knew the reason for her stiffness.
He coughed and turned his gaze on Ji Ziming, who was sitting opposite of him, only to realize that the latter was happily enjoying his breakfast and was not affected by this obvious abnormality.
“I’m pretty good. I find the bed in this house to be very comfortable. Do you guys feel the same way?”
He was just randomly finding a topic. The atmosphere at the dining table was too queer, what with the young chap next to him remaining aloof, and he had got no more topics to discuss with his niece.
“I think it’s not bad. Uncle, you can stay a few days if you like it, but can you promise me one thing?”
Pei Ge placed her handbag on the chair beside her and looked up at her uncle with twinkling eyes.
“What thing? As your uncle, I will agree to any of your requests.”
He voiced his agreement without waiting to hear what it was, not expecting the condition his niece would give him.
“It’s actually nothing much; I am just wondering if you can treat my mother-in-law better. She’s a person with dignity; plus, you’re staying in their house, so shouldn’t you treat her with more respect and politeness?”
She hesitated a bit but still decided to say it out. Surprisingly, her stubborn uncle had a chance of attitude after entering the doors to this house. He nodded steadfastly and said, “You’re right. From now on, I will strive to be nicer to her.”
