No matter how he persuaded his father, the latter was unwilling to believe that that woman was ruthless. He even did not wish to see his son badmouthing her.
Perhaps it was the best to kick Qu Xiujie out.
However, the sound of the door being unlocked became soft, and eventually there was a pause. Just as Qu Xiujie was about to flip open his blanket, there was no more noise outside.
After listening for a while, there was still no sound. He carefully crept to the door and heard a man’s voice seemingly asking what someone was doing in front of his room.
When there was no more sound outside, he looked through the peephole and saw nothing along the corridor, yet his phone rang.
It was a call from Murong Cheng.
“Bro, are you alright?”
There was worry in his friend’s voice. He had just knocked off not long ago when he heard from the manager on duty that a suspicious person was at the hotel. The manager did not know what the man was looking for but still saw him standing outside Qu Xiujie’s room for a long while.
“I’m alright; did something happen?”
Qu Xiujie turned on the lights in the room; the night skyline outside vanished instantly and what was reflected on the glass became him with a dagger in hand.
“Didn’t you hear any sound outside your room?”
Murong Cheng was in disbelief that Qu Xiujie could quickly pick up his call. It meant that the latter had not drunk much before sleeping since he was not in deep sleep.
“I heard it, so I woke up, and by the time I went to the door, there’s already no one there,” he answered truthfully, unminding of his friend finding out his current mental state.
“Do you think that it might be that woman in your family’s doing?”
His friend made a bold conjecture, not having any idea on who else would want him dead aside from that old hag.
“Yes.”
He sat on the bed for a while, his well-build frame looking especially alluring on the window’s reflection.
“If it’s really her, what do you intend to do?” asked his friend softly from the other end.
“What can I do? Though she wants me dead, how can I let her kill me easily?”
There was a look of viciousness in his eyes, as though he were a nocturnal animal that was out hunting. His eyes were frighteningly dark.
However, he did not mind Old Lady Qu striking first because that meant that she was afraid of the threat he was posing. Though he had not found any solid evidence, seeing how uptight the old lady was, his suspicion that what he was seeing now was just the tip of the iceberg grew.
It seemed that that old woman was a lot more terrifying than what he had imagined.
“You must think through it carefully. You have nothing left now, and if you really go against her, you need someone equally capable like her to support you.”
Murong Cheng was terrified. If his staff had not spotted the person outside Qu Xiujie’s room in the nick of time, his friend might have been unable to see tomorrow’s sun.
“What do you think of Ji Ziming?”
Qu Xiujie placed the dagger beneath his pillow again as he posed this question wryly.
“You said Ji Ziming? CEO Ji?”
His friend could not believe his ears. Could he be too frightened that a nerve in his brain had stopped functioning properly?
“Right. This hotel’s Ji Ziming, the guy every girl in the capital wants to marry.”
Qu Xiujie laughed even louder. Old Lady Qu had started to move against him, and if he did not have the ability to hit back, Murong Cheng would only be able to see his corpse tomorrow, and it might not even be a complete corpse.
“Are you sure?”
His friend was still in disbelief.
“I’m sure and certain.”
He still had not gotten the chance to investigate how much Pei Ge and her mother looked alike, but he knew that in the capital, nobody other than her husband could support him.
“I… I wish you all the best.”
The whole capital knew that that man was not easy to deal with. Here, even if one were to offer his company to the man, the latter might not necessarily accept it. He had connections in the underworld and in the political arena. As long as he stamped his foot, the whole capital would shake.
Murong Cheng rarely saw his big boss, and even Old Lady Qu might not have a chance to meet him often.
Even more so were those queuing to discuss business deals with Ji Ziming.
“What do you mean? Can’t I, your brother, have a little pursuit in life?”
Qu Xiujie laughed as he looked ruthlessly at where his dagger was. The night was glowing like the day, yet the darkness hidden underneath the pillow was glowing.
“Bro, I’m not disagreeing with you. It’s good that you have some pursuit, but this is too much, and it doesn’t seem to be a good thing. If you manage to get the CEO’s support, I feel that there’s no need to fight it out with that old woman in your family anymore because I can see the results.”
“What do you mean?”
He stood up and proudly looked at the rippling muscles in his abdomen and arm reflected on the glass window.
“The CEO could fend off ten, or even a hundred, of that old hag.”
He was very satisfied with his friend’s answer.
“Got it. I’ll widen your horizon and let you know that I can get Ji Ziming’s aid. Just you wait and see.”
He hung up after speaking. He pulled the curtains and went back to sleep.
On the other end, Murong Cheng was no longer at ease. It seemed that his friend would not back down if he did not win his boss’s support. He was probably too frightened by Old Lady Qu’s attack such that he started acting impulsively.
The next day when he came to the hotel for work, after changing into his work attire, he rushed to Qu Xiujie’s room. He pressed the bell, and not long after, his friend opened the door.
“Why are you here so early?”
Qu Xiujie opened the door and walked back to the mirror. He felt exceptionally pleased looking at the man reflected in it.
“You aren’t really going to look for Ji Ziming, are you?!”
Seeing how well-dressed he was, Murong Cheng could not help but ask that in shock.
