“I say, you’re not a good father…”
Qin Chu: “…”
“You were not dead, but you left your daughters to me as if that were your last words. You even passed the message to me through your stupid assistant. Like dude, what the fack?”
Qin Chu: “…”
“At that time, I thought I would probably die.”
“How could you die? You turned out fine even when you were tricked by Huo Siqian in such a despicable way last time. Still, you came back safe. As the saying goes, those who survive a great disaster are destined to have good fortunes. You’ll have a happy life waiting for you. Don’t be a doomsayer. If Huo Mian knew about this, she’ll give you a good beating.”
“Okay, I won’t do it again.”
“Live well and find Huo Mian.”
“Okay. I’ll find her.”
Heaving out a deep sigh, Su Yu stood up.
“Well, I’m not used to talk to you so solemnly. Oh, have you eaten? Tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll get it for you.”
“I’ve just eaten the porridge that my mother cooked for me. I can only take liquid food.”
“Yeah. I forgot you’re a patient who just had a big surgery. Okay, rest well. I’ve been working hard to find Huo Mian’s whereabouts. I’ll tell you when I find something.”
“Okay.”
“Take care. I’ve got to go now.”
“Su Yu,” Qin Chu said.
“Don’t say thank you to me. At this moment, I don’t need your gratitude, and I’ll feel uncomfortable if you say that.”
Su Yu knew Qin Chu was grateful to him even though he didn’t express it.
After all, Qin Chu had said “Thank you” to him before.
“No. I won’t say ‘Thank you’ this time.” Qin Chu smiled.
“Good. Let’s not say it between us… Anyway, I didn’t do it for you… We’ve never been friends. But… I’m Huo Mian’s friend and you’re her husband. I just can’t bear to see my friend in trouble,” Su Yu tried to explain, but Qin Chu had seen through him a long time ago.
“Well, I will thank you in Mian’s place.”
“See? You did it again… That damned girl Huo Mian would never thank me; she just likes to scorn me.”
Qin Chu smiled at his words.
“When our sharp-tongued Dr. Huo comes back, I’ll make her treat me to a big meal to comfort my scarred heart. I’ve not slept well for days.”
“Okay. When she comes back, she’ll treat all of us with meals for seven consecutive days,” said Qin Chu.
“Haha! That’s a good idea. But if she has to pay our meals for seven days, I wonder if she’ll go broke.” Su Yu chuckled.
He felt warmed inside as he imagined the scene.
“No. My wife… is very rich.” Qin Chu’s lips curved up.
“Right. Huo Mian is a capitalist… and she is good at making money. Besides, she has earned a lot as the vice director of the hospital. We can’t take pity on her and must demand her to pay for our meals for seven days,” said Su Yu.
After he left, the ward was quiet again.
Qin Chu picked up his cellphone and opened the album; looking at Huo Mian’s pictures, emotions surged up in him again.
A sharp pain pierced his chest.
He knew this pain was not physical but psychological; it happened whenever he missed her too much.
It seemed when he didn’t take the drugs, the pain came to him very fast.
His chest spasmed in pain as if his heart had shrunk into a ball; it felt just like the way he had felt in the four years when he stayed in the U.S.
He felt suffocated by the excruciating pain.
“Mian… Wait for me. I will find you.” He pressed a hand on his chest, looking agonized.
Meanwhile, on the deserted island, Huo Mian found that Huo Siqian had disappeared.
She hadn’t seen him for a whole day. He didn’t cook meals; such a thing had never happened before during the days when they were on the island.
Has he left the island? Huo Mian wondered.
