The assistant pulled up a chair and sat down beside the bed. He looked at Huo Tingrui as the latter lay in bed quietly. Huo Tingrui’s face was bereft of color.
Although the law was not considered a dangerous profession, if money or power was involved, things could get tricky.
The assistant had been in the trade for almost 10 years. However, this was the first time he had seen someone blatantly abducting a lawyer, at gunpoint no less.
The assistant muttered. “I told your brother not to take the case, but he insisted. Even though he knew it would spell trouble, he took it up anyway.”
“How could commoners like us stand against powerful men like them?”
“Someone else is bound to help them. Why did he have to volunteer himself?”
The assistant bent over and buried his head in his knees. The incident had genuinely given him quite a scare. He would never forget the taste of having a gun trained to his temple.
Huo Yao sat on the chair lazily without saying a word as she listened to the assistant. Since they had chosen the job, they had to take the risk.
Those were the rules of survival.
Huo Yao snapped out of her daze when the doctor knocked on the door outside. She told the assistant to take care of Huo Tingrui before she left the hospital ward.
The doctor handed a medical report to Huo Yao. “Here are the results of the X-ray. Other than external injuries, the patient has suffered some minor internal injuries as well. I am not so sure about this shadow appearing over his organs, so I need to send this for analysis.”
Huo Yao took the X-ray and looked at it. Before long, she put it back into the envelope and nodded as she thanked the doctor.
The doctor smiled. “You’re welcome. Oh yes. I recall you requested a blood test. Everything came out normal except for some trace elements which seem higher than usual. However, it won’t have any negative effects on him.”
The doctor paused before he added. “Our hospital isn’t equipped to conduct further testing. If you have any concerns, you can always take him to First People’s Hospital. Their apparatus is more advanced.”
“Got it. Thanks.” Huo Yao nodded politely.
Before long, the doctor left.
Huo Yao stood where she was with her eyes lowered. Just as she was about to go back into the hospital ward, her phone rang in her pocket.
She took out her phone and glanced at it before answering it.
Min Yu’s cool voice could be heard over the phone. “Are you hurt?”
Huo Yao stood to the side and acknowledged softly. “Nope. I didn’t lift a finger.”
A powerless look emerged in Min Yu’s deep dark eyes. He raised his head and looked out of the tent. There was a fire burning on the ground. The light from the dancing flames could be seen in his eyes. It was very quiet outside.
After some time, he decided not to blow her cover and said, “I have a bad connection over here. Don’t worry. If you need help, call Yang Yi. He will take care of everything. I can probably only come back in a few days.”
“Okay.” Huo Yao pursed her lips. As she looked sideways, she caught sight of Yang Yi walking over, so she said, “Okay then. Rest early. I have to go.”
“Uh huh.” Min Yu held his phone without hanging up. He looked at the phone screen after removing it from his ear only to see Huo Yao was still on the line.
Min Yu sighed and said softly ten seconds later, “Huo Yao.”
Huo Yao was still holding the phone when her face suddenly twitched. “I forgot to hang up. Bye bye.”
The moment she finished her sentence, she hung up quickly.
