Huo Tingrui’s pupils shrunk in response. The moment the box came flying towards him, he instinctively retreated several steps until he bumped into the wall behind him. He was unable to dodge the box, and it instantly struck his shoulder.
He did not know what lay inside the box, but it was very heavy. When it struck him on his shoulder, the pain seared through his entire body. His arm was in so much pain that it became completely numb.
Huo Tingrui’s face turned ghastly pale. He had inadvertently hit his head on the wall in the process of avoiding the box. He became a little giddy.
The men wearing a cap swiftly approached Huo Tingrui. He bent over and wanted to pick up the box and hit Huo Tingrui once more. The moment he saw someone appearing at the other end of the corridor through the corner of his eye, he could only forget about it. Instead, he darted through the emergency exit and escaped.
The man appearing at the other end of the corridor was none other than Huo Tingrui’s assistant. He had been waiting outside in the lounge for some time now, but his boss was nowhere to be seen, so he came over in search of him.
He ran over anxiously the moment he saw Huo Tingrui. He helped Huo Tingrui up and asked worriedly. “Boss, what happened? Are you okay?”
Huo Tingrui still felt a little dizzy. After resting for a minute, he looked up and waved his hand and said softly, “I’m fine.”
The assistant noticed the paleness of Huo Tingrui’s face, so he couldn’t help looking worried. He glanced at the ground before he bent over to pick up a pair of glasses and handed them to Huo Tingrui.
“Let me call someone from the procuratorate to help stop the culprit,” said the assistant as he quickly took out his phone.
Huo Tingrui leaned against the wall without saying a word. He kept pressing a shoulder with one hand tightly until his veins were visible.
After the assistant was done making the calls, he finally noticed Huo Tingrui’s reaction and automatically looked at the box on the ground.
Since the box was hurled onto the ground previously, its seal had already split open. The assistant squatted and went through it cautiously. The moment he caught sight of its contents, a solemn look appeared on his face.
The box contained a few ordinary bricks. However, they were drenched in blood making them piercingly red. The smell of blood was so intense that it was nauseating.
The assistant nearly could not control himself and retched before quickly closing the box.
In the legal world, it was normal to encounter people to get angry after losing their cases. In the heat of the moment, people often blamed it on the lawyer. In some instances, some of them ended up threatening the lawyers.
It was not Huo Tingrui’s first time encountering such threats. However, people usually sent him threatening letters anonymously. It was the first time anyone had attacked him personally. Also, it was done right inside the courthouse.
Considering the blatant attack, the culprit what’s clearly of high status. The assistant suddenly felt chills running down his back the moment he thought about the case today. He looked at Huo Tingrui worriedly. “B-Boss, they must be trying to warn us.”
Huo Tingrui exhaled. He glanced at the things on the ground and said deeply, “I know.”
“Then what should we do? That was just the first court session for the appeal. If this went on…” The assistant did not dare imagine the kind of threats they will continue encountering because of this case. They might even end up paying the price in blood.
Huo Tingrui closed his eyes briefly. The moment he opened them, his eyes seemed completely glacial. “Since I have chosen this profession, this is unavoidable. They might not care about the lives of the innocent, but are we going to be like them?”
His assistant glanced at Huo Tingrui. “But it’s so dangerous for you.”
Huo Tingrui sneered and responded. “Do I look afraid?”
His assistant lowered his head and smiled sadly.. Huo Tingrui might be unafraid, but he certainly was.
