“Mom, why are you rehashing these random stories again?” Yan Su rubbed her eyebrows. “Will you please just concentrate on your meal?”
Jiang Peiying rolled her eyes at her and beamed at Luosang. “It’s because I rarely get to meet Susu’s friends. You’re the first one I’m meeting after she finished high school.”
“I understand.” Luosang nodded her head. “Susu is a really good person. She’s one of my best friends. Back then when my family fell on hard times, when we were at our poorest and my father was unjustly imprisoned, no one wanted to be friends with me. Susu was the only one who sided with me. I’ll always remember that Susu was with me throughout the hardest times in my life. I believe that a person doesn’t need many friends; a sincere one is more than enough.”
Jiang Peiying nodded her head; she approved very much of Luosang. This was a girl with a strong sense of loyalty and was not a two-faced sort who would stab others in the back. “Susu said that if it wasn’t for your husband who recommended her to the music company, she wouldn’t be where she is today.”
“It’s because he saw how much Susu has helped me,” Luosang said with a laugh, slightly embarrassed. After all, Nian Junting did it solely to get back at Ye Chuen back then. “But at the end of the day, Susu still has to rely on her own ability. A recommendation can only get you so far.”
Jiang Peiying fed a mouthful of rice to Yan Yan and asked in a deliberately casual way, “Are you the only child in your family?”
“I have a younger brother. He’s in the same school as us, but just a couple of years behind. He’s in the Directing department.”
Yan Jin, whose head had been buried in his food the entire time, suddenly realized something was amiss and looked up. “Mom… Ouch!”
Before he could say another word, Jiang Peiying stomped hard on his foot.
“What’s wrong, Jin?” Luosang asked in concern.
“Nothing, Older Sister. I was simply blinded by your beauty,” Yan Jin said with a resentful grimace.
For a while, the entire room fell silent.
Luosang was stunned for a moment before she burst out laughing. “Susu, your brother is cute and hilarious! How I wish I could take him home with me to stay for a few days! That way, Little Apple will have some company.”
“Sure, Older Sister! Given how cute you look, I’m sure my nephew must be very cute too. I love my little nephew the most!” Yan Jin blurted out.
He had finally pieced the puzzle together. Since this lady was Mo Liuxi’s biological older sister, would it be called “heading deep into the lion’s den” if he went to their house?
Luosang was bemused. According to the generational hierarchy, Little Apple would indeed have to address him as Uncle.
However, Susu’s little brother had really quick mental reflexes! He almost seemed like a prodigy!
Luosang nodded. “Sure. Just come with me after school…”
“Jin, can you bear to part with Yan Yan?” Yan Su could not sit still any longer, and she nudged him with a forced smile. What a nuisance her mother and brother were being!
Yan Yan seemed to understand something too. She grabbed Yan Jin’s arm tightly and refused to let go. Unfortunately, no one could understand what she meant when she went, “Goo goo ga ga…”
“Well, why don’t Yan Yan come along too?” Luosang asked. “Yan Yan is my goddaughter after all.”
“Goddaughter?” Jiang Peiying repeated in surprise.
“Yeah! Susu is Little Apple’s godmother. Naturally, I have to be Yan Yan’s godmother,” Luosang explained matter-of-factly. “Wasn’t this what we agreed on when I gave birth?”
“That is indeed the case!” Yan Su nodded. “But Yan Yan can’t go. She’s still too young. If she goes to an unfamiliar house, she’ll start crying at night.”
Luosang pondered about it and agreed with her. However, it was not appropriate for her to invite Yan Su’s mother over, and she knew Jiang Peiying would not agree to it either.
“I guess I’ll just go on my own,” Yan Jin swung his short legs as he remarked. “I’ll come home after one night there. Although playing with Yan Yan every day is fun, I do want to play with my little nephew too.”
