“Xixi, it’s all my fault. I didn’t even know that something had happened to you. I shouldn’t have left you last night. I should’ve watched over you every single day. I shouldn’t have gone back to sleep in the laboratory.” A sudden look of agony and helplessness appeared in Jiang Yuning’s jet-black eyes. “Didn’t we agree on watching a movie together the day after tomorrow? What should I do if you were to leave so suddenly? What should I do if you were to leave me behind? I wouldn’t want to live anymore. Take me with you!”
Nian Xi was already slightly baffled, to begin with. However, after she heard what he said, she became even more puzzled.
However, he had always been innocent and genuine. When Nian Xi listened to his words of desperation, her heart inevitably ached.
She was initially disappointed by how he did not show up when she was rushed into the hospital, as well as how uncontactable he was.
However, when she saw his current behavior, she felt a lump form in her throat.
“Jiang Yuning… You’ll be the death of me.” Nian Xi inhaled several breaths of air, and she felt a slight, painful ache in her lungs. “I’m not dead yet.”
Jiang Yuning’s jet-black eyebrows quivered, and a look of confusion flashed across his eyes. “But your mom said that you’re dead.”
Nian Xi was rendered speechless.
She thought.
“Give me your hand,” Nian Xi ordered feebly.
Jiang Yuning reached his hand out obediently.
Nian Xi then summoned all her strength and bit into his skin without going easy on him. His skin tore open, and fresh blood oozed out of his wound. “Can I even bite you if I’m dead? You fool!”
Jiang Yuning stared at his bleeding hand in stupefaction, before his jet-black eyes gradually began to slide back into focus.
In the next instant, he looked at Nian Xi again and began to touch her face, as if he could not believe she was right in front of him. When he felt her warmth, he asked, “Am I hallucinating? Xixi, are you really… alive?”
“Of course I’m alive…” Nian Xi would have beaten him up if she could get up. “You dabble so much in science, and yet you believe in these strange superstitions! Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”
“I didn’t believe in them until I met you.” Jiang Yuning forcefully grabbed her hand, his face beaming with elation as if he had recovered what he had lost. “Xixi, you’re a cop, and sometimes, I get afraid that you’d be in danger. But I can’t stop you from being a cop because I like you. Thus, I told myself that there will be another life, and even if you and I are gone one day, we would still be able to meet in our next lives. I can only console myself like that.”
Nian Xi was not someone who would easily get emotional, especially in the presence of so many people. However, her eyes reddened when she heard what he said, and tears almost flowed out from her eyes. “You fool! I’ll live until 120 and not a day less!”
Jiang Yuning was momentarily stunned. “But I think I’ll have difficulties doing that.”
Nian Xi laughed, but her wound and lungs instantly began to hurt, triggering a bout of coughs.
“Xixi, you… you should stop talking.” Jiang Yuning was scared silly when he saw how violently she was coughing, and he felt as helpless as a child.
“Let’s head back to the ward first,” the nurse said as she began to bring Nian Xi back into the ward.
Luosang held onto Nian Junting’s arm and exclaimed, “Professor Jiang’s very affectionate!”
Nian Junting replied coldly, “You women are easily duped by his sweet talk. Everyone knows how to flatter others, but being reliable is the most important thing about a man. This guy is too arrogant. He dared to glare at me and even threaten me!”
Luosang blinked several times, her face riddled with doubt.
Niang Junting inched closer to her and continued, “I’m serious! At that time, his gaze was pretty freaky. His aura was terrifying as well. It was as if he was going to kill me if I dared to utter another word.”
Luosang peeked at her husband, and she realized that he grew silent, which was rare and unusual.
“Dear, are you shocked? There, there.” Luosang began to massage his chest teasingly.
