She hadn’t checked his wounds carefully earlier. Now that she took a closer look at his hands, she saw that those lacerations were bone-deep.
Her heart twitched slightly. She didn’t know how he managed to do that.
Though he seemed weak, it turned out he had great tolerance.
His hands were badly injured. What about his body?
With that thought, Nian Xi lifted his shirt without thinking.
“Xi, what are you doing? Jiang Yuning was startled.
“Don’t move.” Nian Xi bent over to check his upper body. His white skin was covered with thin, bleeding wounds. He was wearing clothes when he wrapped the wire around himself, so his body wasn’t injured as badly as his bare hands were. But still, the wire caused some wounds on his back. Apart from that, some bruises and lacerations were seen.
“You got these injuries when you pushed me away from the falling device and let me fall on you, right?” she asked. Nian Xi replayed the scene in her mind. In the darkness, he pushed her away. She felt a sharp pain. He was underneath her, so he must have suffered more. Nian Xi almost forgot about that when the fire broke out.
“Emm, I think so,” murmured Jiang Yuning, scratching his head.
Nian Xi looked at him, choking on her words. “You were hurt, but you still carried me. Don’t you feel any pain?”
While making their way to the ground, she was clinging to shoulders so tightly she was afraid she might fall.
She had no idea that every movement she made probably made his wounds hurt even more.
“I… forgot.” Jiang Yuning looked into her eyes and said sincerely in a low voice, “All I thought about was getting you out of the building. I couldn’t let anything happen to you.”
“Jiang Yuning, you’re an idiot.” Nian Xi suddenly hugged him, then said sincerely, “Thank you.”
You’re my hero, she thought to herself.
When she was a little girl, she loved watching superhero movies like Iron Man and Spider-Man together with Nian Junting. Now she felt as if she had met her own superhero.
Jiang Yuning was taken by surprise by her remark. He gasped quickly, his cheeks burning.
It felt like a dream.
Nian Xi’s chest was so soft.
“Xi…” A short while later, he murmured, “How much longer are you going to keep your hands on my chest?”
Being reminded by him, Nian Xi realized that her hands were still on his chest.
She raised her head, saw his pale face turn slightly red. She found him so cute, so she gently pinched his nipples and said, “As long as I want.”
Jiang Yuning trembled slightly. He felt as if electric currents were running through his body, gathering in his lower abdomen.
“Xi, I feel uncomfortable…,” he said.
“Alright. I know you do. The ambulance is on its way. You’ll soon be in the hospital,” Nian Xi said pulling down his shirt.
Jiang Yuning pressed his lips together. He wanted to tell her that it wasn’t his wounds that were making him feel uncomfortable. It was the area she accidentally touched when she first met him. The firetruck finally arrived, so he didn’t mention that to Nian Xi.
Then the ambulance arrived. No one was trapped in the building, making Jiang Yuning the only injured person so far. Nian Xi told him to go to the hospital without her because she had to stay at the crime scene with the suspect and wait for her colleagues to arrive.
“I don’t want to go. I want to stay here with you.” Jiang Yuning stood his ground.
“No. You have to go,” Nian Xi said to him seriously. “If your hands get disabled, I’ll have no one to clean my apartment in the future.”
