Ye Qian stared at me in astonishment, as if she was trying to find a weakness on my face.
In the end, she failed. She averted her gaze, stirred her coffee, and asked, “I heard it was you who introduced Lu Yan to Gu Nian?”
I nodded. “Yes! Is that a problem?” I tilted my head and thought for a moment. “It was hard for the four of us to get together, so we went to celebrate. We patronized a Cantonese restaurant. We happened to bump into Gu Nian there. He said his assistant had recently left for personal reasons and he needed a new stand-in, so we recommended Lu Yan to him. They had an interview on the spot. It worked out. Lu Yan thanked us profusely and said that we were her lucky stars.”
Ye Qian looked at me with a sad smile.
I looked at her innocently. “What’s wrong? Is she not good at her job? Did she make you mad?”
Ye Qian shook her head and suddenly teared up. “Nanxing, do you think there’s karma in this world?”
I nodded solemnly. “There is!”
Ye Qian looked at me in surprise.
I smiled brightly. “You reap what you sow. There is karma in everything. Big Sister, you’re a clever person. Why would you ask such a question? I’ll give you an example. You took the initiative to find me and extend me an olive branch, so the consequence is that even though Gu Yan and I have a bad relationship, we still have a connection between us.”
Ye Qian smiled wryly. “Nanxing, I’m so sorry for what happened at the Jing Family. My hands were tied.”
I nodded. “I understand. Sister Ye Qian was caught in an awkward position. Then again, why would Gu Yan think she’d be valued more than you do? Big Sister, it’s clear who is truly capable. I believe Auntie Lan recognizes that as well, which is why she treats you better than Gu Yan.”
Ye Qian’s smile turned sadder. She muttered, “She thinks she’s being kind to me, but in reality…”
I picked up her emotions. “It has made things more difficult for you?”
Ye Qian picked up the coffee and took a sip. I believed the bitterness of the black coffee was nothing compared to the bitterness in her heart.
“Nanxing, Gu Yan has never given up on Jing Tian because she believes she is the most suitable wife for Jing Tian. She loves Jing Tian the most. Even though she received a cold shoulder from Madam Jing, she won’t give up. Master Gu Er dotes on his niece. He wants to use Gu Yan to form an alliance with reliable in-laws. His targets are Jing Tian and Qu Hao.”
“Qu Hao?” I was a little surprised.
Ye Qian nodded. “But Qu Hao doesn’t like Gu Yan, so Master Gu Er won’t force Gu Yan on him.”
I sneered, “But he’d force her on Jing Tian?”
Ye Qian looked at me. “Nanxing, Qu Hao isn’t from the underworld, but Jing Tian is. You should be familiar with the rules of the underworld.”
I chuckled, “The powerful make the rules?”
Ye Qian nodded. “Yes, it’s not impossible to get Jing Tian and the Jing Family to bow down to Master Gu Er. It’s just that it hasn’t reached the point for Master Gu Er to do something like that.”
“Do you think Master Jing Qi will submit?” I asked coldly.
Ye Qian smiled and sighed. “Nanxing, you’re still too naive. Jing Tian and Tong Le have protected you too well.”
I didn’t get what she meant, and I was annoyed by her show of pity. “Why are we suddenly talking about me? Weren’t we talking about Lu Yan?”
I also knew her weak spot. As expected, Ye Qian’s expression changed.
“Lu Yan is impressive.” She mumbled.
I raised my eyebrows. “What do you mean by that? Are you talking about her temper? She is indeed a very kind girl. Even though I didn’t know her that well, we did spend a whole school year together. After all, she has to have a good temper to accommodate Mai Qi and me.”
