Lea was unperturbed. He turned around to glance at Gregory and called out nonchalantly. “Why are you in a daze? Bring those bird eggs over.”
Gregory paused for a second before delivering an entire bird’s nest to Lea.
Lea frowned as he retrieved two eggs from the nest. “It’s my fault for not making things clear. One of our house rules is that we cannot take everything. Taking the whole nest—don’t do this again. Mengmeng doesn’t like it.”
Gregory looked blank and was at a complete loss.
Lea reached for a small bowl and ladled a small portion of honey before adding water. After mixing it into honey water, he handed the cup to Gregory. “When harvesting honey, we will only take half of what’s in the bees’ hive. When hunting, we do not hunt pregnant, nursing or young animals. It’s the same for bird eggs. We can only take at the most two eggs from each nest. These are our family rules.”
Gregory nodded hesitantly. He was extremely sensitive to the words “our family”. He could clearly feel the blood in his veins churning and bubbling uncontrollably.
“Deliver this water to Mengmeng. She just woke up from a long sleep and needs a lot of water to rehydrate.” Lea instructed as he took over the nest and put it aside. “Remember to apologize to Mengmeng. Don’t let her fret over this matter. Otherwise Elvis and I will not let you off.”
Gregory felt exceptionally ill-at-ease. He took the cup but didn’t even dare to meet Gu Mengmeng’s eyes.
Lea’s attitude indicated acknowledgment that he was part of the family, right? But Gu Mengmeng hadn’t said anything… what if she didn’t agree?”
He greatly feared that Gu Mengmeng would personally extinguish this hope of his. What if she refused to eat the eggs he brought back? What if she said Lea was just fooling around and asked him not to mind him? What if…
Gregory was on tenterhooks as he stepped closer to Gu Mengmeng. He handed the cup to her, with only by the slight wrinkling of his brow reflecting the raging anxiety in his heart.
Even someone as good in psychology as Gu Mengmeng was completely unable to detect anything out-of-place from his expression.
Nevertheless, Gu Mengmeng had noticed Lea’s behavior toward Gregory and understood his intentions.
She sighed in exasperation. This Lea had promised to give her more time to think about it but now seemed to trying to hasten things in that direction.
Gu Mengmeng looked past Gregory to glare at Lea, who just smiled charmingly back at her. He nodded, prompting her to just accept Gregory. It was only in name anyway.
Gu Mengmeng held her forehead. She accepted the cup from Gregory and said, “Gregory, let’s talk.”
Gregory’s heart thumped. He clenched his fists tightly as he lifted his eyes to look at Gu Mengmeng. Even his pupils were quivering.
What did she want to talk about? Was she going to tell him to get lost?
No she wouldn’t, at least not now.
She still had to go to the Motou mountains during the drought season to get the Love of the Sky. Thereafter, she still had to send those five females to the Motou mountains.
With these two tasks still unaccomplished, he should be able to stay on for now.
Despite his best efforts to comfort himself with those arguments, Gregory’s fists remained tightly clenched. His throat was so dry that he only managed to squeeze out a single “Mmm” in reply.
Gu Mengmeng lowered her head. She took two deep breaths before lifting her eyes to look at Gregory. “I don’t know what kind of person I am in your eyes, but I can tell you that I am selfish, greedy, rash and a troublemaker. Apart from Elvis and Lea, I don’t think any other male would be able to tolerate someone like me.”
