Old Master had brought Jun Xiyan with him, arriving in front of Tang Mo’er.
“Miss Tang, it will be Mohan and Xiyan’s wedding day on the first day of next month. You must find the time to attend their wedding.”
Old Master Gu’s eyes were practically glittering with sparks, as he challenged Tang Mo’er with his gaze.
Tang Mo’er could only sneer inside but she had to take her hat off to Old Master Gu, he was indeed the most cunning person she’d come across.
Almost 40 years ago, the Gu family was beaten down by the Lu family and was at their rock-bottom. It was Old Master Gu who led the Gu family through their toughest times, he held the power to control everything.
The guest list for the day was impressive, everyone was well-bred and well-dressed. She, on the other hand, had nothing that would enable her to have the edge over them. Old Master Gu had done it on purpose, having her appear at the party just like a clown. What a good move.
Tang Mo’er straightened her back, smiling back at Old Master Gu. “Old Master, are you sincere about inviting me to their wedding? I’ll be sure to turn up, but I’m just afraid that once I appear, I’ll bring the groom away with me.”
Old Master Gu looked at her with a somber expression.
To be frank, Old Master Gu wasn’t very fond of Tang Mo’er. She was Lu Jinwen’s daughter and with the feud between the Gu’s and the Lu’s for all these years, they were bound to have a sour relationship.
Back then, Lu Qi’er was the Lu family’s daughter and though she fancied Mohan, Gu Mohan didn’t feel the same for Lu Qi’er. That explained why Lu Qi’er was never made Gu Mohan’s fiancée, it was because Old Master Gu didn’t act upon it.
Lu Qi’er was still considered eligible since she was the legitimate Elder Miss of the Lu family, but Tang Mo’er couldn’t compare. Tang Mo’er was just an illegitimate daughter of Lu Jinwen’s who was powerless and had no standing.
It made things worse that Tang Mo’er was Lin Xuanji’s daughter, he knew it ever since he first saw Tang Mo’er in Karghalik. He would never allow Mohan to marry Lin Xuanji’s daughter, the reason being the existence of Lin Xuanyin and Old Master Lin, who would want to pick up such a hot potato?
Though Old Master Gu wasn’t actively spending his time outside, he had clear insights on all of these matters.
Moreover, Tang Mo’er really couldn’t compare with Jun Xiyan in terms of her standing. Jun Xiyan was the daughter of the Jun family and did well as a diplomat. She was elegant and had the gumption. On the other hand, Old Master Gu wasn’t that impressed with Tang Mo’er’s hundred million followers on Weibo. He treated it as a mere hoax, wealthy families were never concerned about such things. In his eyes, Tang Mo’er was merely an entertainer.
Old Master Gu wasn’t angry after hearing her words, he merely reacted by laughing. “Miss Tang, you’re indeed humorous! If you really have the capability to bring Mohan away on their wedding day, you can go ahead and try to show it to me tonight.”
Tang Mo’er remained composed. “Old Master, you’re really good at hitting me where it hurts. I concede my defeat, but I’ll have to ask you to stop causing problems for me. I do feel strongly that you should thank the heavens for me to not be causing trouble for you, how dare you even provoke me?”
“Ha,” Old Master let out a wry smile. “Miss Tang, you’re behaving exactly like your mother.”
Lin Xuanji.
Old Master Gu truly admired Lin Xuanji and so he was always willing to continue talking about Lin Xuanji whenever her name was mentioned. “Back then, when your mother was confined by Lu Jinwen she gave birth to you, suffered a miscarriage after that and went crazy for two whole years. The truth is that she was putting up an act, your mother had used that two years to plan a grand escape, eventually succeeding in her plans.”
Tang Mo’er was flabbergasted. Her mother was pretending to be crazy?
And she had escaped?
“It’s such a shame, even if she did manage to escape, she still wasn’t able to outact Lu Jinwen. She was still captured by Lu Jinwen in the end.”
“What happened after?” Tang Mo’er asked.
Her mother had escaped and with Lu Jinwen’s domineering ways, there was no way he would let her mother off.
Old Master Gu was such a jerk, he left her hanging off the cliff. “Subsequently… I can’t tell you more.”
“…”
“However, I can say that your mother was an intelligent woman and was extraordinarily talented. I wouldn’t really say that it’s a blessing, but it was her astuteness that ultimately led to her misfortune. It’s only because Lu Jinwen and your mother were equally intelligent and they were both wounded, it caused catastrophic destruction to the both of them.”
Really?
Was it truly like what Old Master Gu had described?
Her mother and Lu Jinwen fought it out and they both suffered?
Her mother had suffered a miscarriage and Lu Jinwen had chosen to side with Lin Xuanyin, how would she choose to stand against Lu Jinwen again?
Mom was pretending to be crazy.
“Miss Tang, I still have some guests to attend to and so I’ll have to take my leave. I heard that you’ll be going back to Karghalik, I’ll wish you a safe trip.” Old Master Gu then walked away.
Just as Tang Mo’er was still pondering over the story Old Master Gu told her about her mother, a few socialites were gossiping behind her—-
“President Gu is going to get married to Miss Jun. Tang Mo’er is a total loser after putting up all those useless struggles.”
“That’s right, if I were her, I’d be too shameful to even appear at this party.”
“Old Master must have warned her off earlier, let’s just wait to watch the drama.”
Tang Mo’er wasn’t in the mood to be bothered about their comments, she walked away and entered the bathroom.
…
In the bathroom, Tang Mo’er was washing her hands at the counter when she accidentally bumped into someone when she turned around.
“I’m sorry…” Tang Mo’er quickly apologized. She lifted her eyes and noticed that it was Jun Xiyan.
Tang Mo’er was stunned and before she could react, Jun Xiyan said, “It’s okay.”
Jun Xiyan walked in front of the sink and started washing her hands, her gaze riveted on Tang Mo’er’s face through the mirror. “Miss Tang, you must have heard earlier on, I’m getting married to Mohan next month. I’m Mohan’s bride-to-be and so I hope that you won’t continue to pester him again.”
Stop pestering Gu Mohan…
Her words resonated through Tang Mo’er’s ears. She turned around and wiped her wet hands with a paper napkin before tucking her silky hair behind her ears. Tang Mo’er remained composed and replied, “Miss Jun, I heard that you’re a diplomat, are you also confused about cause-effect even when you’re at work?”
Jun Xiyan was bewildered, her eyes widened as she looked at Tang Mo’er.
They were close to each other and Tang Mo’er used a voice that only Jun Xiyan could hear. “Everyone knows about my relationship with Gu Mohan, it’s just that Old Master Gu had sealed all news about it… but is Miss Jun going to cover things up in order to remain as Gu Mohan’s fiancée?
“Who gave you the right to ask me to not pester Gu Mohan even when you’re the homewrecker in this case? I didn’t even ask you to return Gu Mohan to me yet and you’re already asserting dominance now?
“I’m actually understanding of Miss Jun, since Mohan has lost his memories and Old Master Gu presented you with such a golden opportunity, it’s well within your rights to fight for your own happiness. However, if you spot a piece of gold on the streets and take it as your own, aren’t you just like a… thief?
“I’ve heard that Miss Jun has had an excellent upbringing and is an intelligent and refined woman, unlike the typical socialite and Old Master Gu also has high hopes for you. I didn’t expect you to behave like this, to be so desperate and stoop so low as to steal someone else’s partner. Why aren’t you putting in more effort to try and keep your man instead of coming at me and warning me to stop pestering him? Is this the supposed refined upbringing that the acclaimed Miss Jun is supposed to demonstrate?”
