“No. I just feel that it’s too soon.” Shu Yan shook her head. She had a lot of hesitation before this but, now that she was pregnant, she couldn’t bring herself to give up on the child.
“As you have decided to marry Feng Zeyu, that means that you have considered this possibility and that you would have a third child. And if you are going to have a third child one way or another, then what difference did it make having one now or later?” Hu Ruixue was much more decisive than Shu Yan and would not hem and haw too much once her mind was set.
“I just worried that it would be difficult for the two children.”
“You don’t know what they think until you talk to them. If they could accept Feng Zeyu as their new daddy, they would probably be okay with a little brother or sister too. Besides, even if they don’t, will you be able to give up on the baby? And what about Feng Zeyu’s thoughts on this? You can’t not tell him.” Hu Ruixue felt that the sooner Shu Yan took care of this, the better it was for everyone.
Shu Yan struggled for an entire day and, when she saw her kids at home that day, she suddenly had no idea how to broach the subject with them.
“Tired? Why don’t you go and rest up? I’ll go get you when dinner is ready.” Feng Zeyu was truly worried about Shu Yan. She hadn’t been herself the last few days. He would have to take her to the hospital for a checkup soon.
“No, I’m not that tired.” One way or another, Shu Yan couldn’t keep it from him. “I’m pregnant.”
Feng Zeyu’s eyes widened instantly as he looked at Shu Yan in disbelief. His lips trembled slightly. Right when Shu Yan thought he was going to be ecstatic or cry his tears of joy, Feng Zeyu let out a breath and his expression became normal. “This child…… let’s hold off on it first.”
Shu Yan knew how much Feng Zeyu liked children and had always wanted to have one of his own. He only said that because he had her and her children in mind. He knew very well the position that she was in, which was why he said that out loud before her.
“Do you know what you are talking about?” Shu Yan’s eyes reddened. “You can give them up, but I can’t.”
“I……” How could I? Feng Zeyu’s lips opened and closed. “It’s too soon…… maybe we will wait for a little while longer.”
“I know what your worries are. That had occurred to me too, but…… she’s already inside of me and I can’t give her up. I told you because I want you to think about how to break it to the kids with me.”
Feng Zeyu didn’t think that Shu Yan would want to keep the child. But JingJing and Tianbao were another problem. Tianbao should be fine, but JingJing had just accepted him. Would she resent him all over again if they suddenly told her that she would be having a little brother or sister?
The two chatted for a long time and exchanged several looks over dinner. After dinner, the family sat on the couch and watched television.
Shu Yan brought out a plate of fruits and snacked on it casually. “Ahem……” She was so anxious that she felt that her throat was stuck together. Clearing her throat, she pretended to ask casually, “Will you be okay if Mommy gives you a little brother or sister?”
JingJing gave Shu Yan a strange look, “Why do you ask if we will be okay with that?”
Tianbao nodded next to her then, cocking his head, he asked, “Is Mommy going to give me a little brother or sister?”
Shu Yan and Feng Zeyu looked at each other. What was a serious matter in their eyes was nothing to the kids.
Shu Yan, in particular, felt dreamy. All the news on television about kids who didn’t want to have little brothers or sisters, what was with these two? Were they not worried that another little brother or sister will split some of their parents’ love for them?
“Mommy might…… give you a little brother or sister.” Shu Yan studied their expressions carefully.
“Are you really pregnant, Mommy? But your stomach is not that big?” asked Jiang Jinjin curiously as she came over to Shu Yan and rubbed her belly.
“Wow! I am going to have a little brother. Mommy, I want a little brother. That way I can play little cars with him and go horseback riding with him.” All the girls in his class liked dolls and did not like to ride horses. They much preferred to draw or dance. A little brother would for sure be better.
“You don’t object to that?” Shu Yan asked JingJing.
Her question baffled JingJing. “I can object to that?”
